Custom Shell And Tube Dump Condenser For Steam Turbine
Dump condenser is a shell‑and‑tube auxiliary heat exchanger, also called atmospheric dump condenser or drain cooler. It condenses surplus bypass steam that would otherwise vent to atmosphere during turbine start‑up, trip, load rejection or sudden steam‑demand drop. It captures dump‑off steam, turns it into reusable condensate, eliminates atmospheric venting, noise, energy & water loss, and stabilizes steam‑cycle system pressure. Different from main vacuum surface condenser, dump condenser mostly runs near atmospheric pressure, handles transient peak steam flow instead of continuous turbine exhaust flow.
Working Principle
Hot bypass / dump‑off steam enters the shell side; cooling water circulates inside heat‑transfer tubes. Steam releases latent heat, condenses into liquid condensate collected at hot‑well. Non‑condensable gases are vented. Recovered condensate can return to boiler feed‑water system. Tube bundle adopts expand‑joint tube‑sheet connection, anti‑vibration support plates, self‑draining tube bow for shutdown drainage.
