Transformer oil coolers are essential components in power transformers, responsible for dissipating the heat generated during transformer operation. This heat arises primarily from core losses (hysteresis and eddy current losses) and copper losses (I²R losses in windings). By cooling the insulating oil, these devices prevent oil degradation, maintain dielectric strength, and ensure the transformer operates within safe temperature limits.
Transformer Oil Cooler Core Functions
Heat Dissipation: Remove excess heat from the transformer oil, keeping its temperature within a safe range (typically 60–80°C for top oil, depending on the transformer rating).
Oil Preservation: Prevent oil oxidation, viscosity reduction, and sludge formation caused by overheating, which would compromise its insulating and cooling properties.
Transformer Protection: Avoid overheating of windings and core, which could lead to insulation breakdown, short circuits, or even catastrophic failure.
Structure: Integrate a pump to circulate oil through the cooler, paired with either air-cooled radiators (forced oil-air coolers, FOA) or water coolers (forced oil-water coolers, FOW). This active circulation increases heat transfer efficiency.
Working Principle: A pump draws hot oil from the transformer, pushes it through the cooler (where it releases heat to air or water), and returns the cooled oil to the tank. This system is faster and more controllable than passive cooling.
Applications: Large power transformers, especially those operating at high loads or in high-temperature environments.
