How a Transformer Oil Air Cooler Works

The cooling process follows a closed transformer-oil circuit and an open air circuit:

A circulating oil pump sends heated transformer oil from the transformer tank to the cooler.

The oil passes through the heat-transfer passages or tubes inside the cooler core.

Fans move ambient air across the external finned surface.

Heat transfers from the oil to the core and then into the moving air.

Cooled oil returns to the transformer tank through the return connection.

Temperature, oil flow and fan operation can be monitored according to the project control scheme.

The transformer oil remains within the oil circuit. Air is used only on the external side of the heat exchanger, which avoids the water-quality and water-leak concerns associated with an oil-water cooler.
