Low-speed diesel engines: below 300 rpm, 2-stroke large bore marine main engine (MAN, Wärtsilä, Hyundai HiMSEN, WinGD).
Charge Air Cooler (CAC / Intercooler / Aftercooler) for low-speed engines is a large capacity water-cooled shell & tube / plate-fin type, designed to cool massive turbocharged scavenge air before entering cylinder liner scavenge ports.
Core Function
Cool hot turbo charge air 180–230°C → 40–55°C
Increase air density → higher combustion efficiency, lower fuel consumption
Reduce thermal load on piston, liner, exhaust valve
Lower NOx & soot emission, support Tier II / Tier III
Stabilize scavenge air temperature for steady engine load

Turbo air inlet temp: 180 ~ 230°C
Air outlet temp: 40 ~ 55°C
Air side working pressure: 0.35 ~ 0.55 MPa
Water side design pressure: 0.8 ~ 1.0 MPa
Heat rejection capacity: 40% ~ 45% of engine rated power
Allowable air pressure drop: 3 ~ 6 kPa
Water pressure drop: 60 ~ 120 kPa
