A sea chest cooler is a hull-integrated heat exchanger designed to remove heat from marine engines and onboard equipment through the surrounding seawater. Installed inside the vessel's sea chest, the cooler keeps freshwater, lube oil or hydraulic oil within a closed circuit while seawater flows across the external tube bundle.
VRCOOLER supplies custom marine sea chest coolers for new vessels, replacement projects and onboard retrofits. Each unit can be engineered around the available sea chest space, required heat load, vessel operating profile and selected tube material.
A Marine Cooling Solution Designed Around the Vessel
Unlike a standard cooler selected only by nominal capacity, a sea chest cooler must work with the vessel's hull structure and seawater flow path. The sea chest opening, mounting position, inlet and outlet arrangement, operating draft, heat load and available clearance all affect the final design.
VRCOOLER can support the selection and customization of the cooler configuration for:
Existing sea chest dimensions
Main engine and auxiliary engine cooling
Generator, bow thruster and hydraulic system cooling
New-build vessel integration
Replacement of an existing box cooler
Retrofit projects with limited installation space
Single or combined cooling circuits

How the Sea Chest Cooler Works
The system uses a closed-loop heat transfer process:
Heated freshwater, lube oil or hydraulic oil enters the tube bundle.
The process fluid releases heat through the corrosion-resistant tube walls.
Seawater passes around the external tubes inside the sea chest.
During navigation, vessel movement helps create seawater flow across the cooler.
When the vessel is stationary or at anchor, temperature-driven natural convection can continue the cooling process where the sea chest arrangement permits it.
The cooled process fluid returns to the engine or equipment circuit.
Because the process fluid remains separated from seawater, the closed-loop arrangement helps protect the internal cooling system from direct seawater contamination.

Key Benefits of a VRCOOLER Sea Chest Cooler
1. Hull-Space Integration
The cooler is designed to sit inside the vessel's sea chest rather than occupying additional engine-room floor space. This supports compact layouts and can simplify installation where external piping or a larger machinery footprint is difficult to accommodate.
2. Reduced Auxiliary Equipment
A properly designed sea chest cooling arrangement can reduce dependence on dedicated raw-water pumps, strainers, filters and long seawater piping runs. Fewer auxiliary components can mean a simpler cooling layout and fewer mechanical points requiring routine attention.
3. Two Operating Flow Conditions
The cooler can use the vessel's movement to promote forced seawater flow during navigation. At berth or anchor, natural convection may continue to move heated seawater upward and draw cooler water into the sea chest, subject to vessel design and installation conditions.
4. Closed-Circuit Process Cooling
Freshwater or oil circulates inside the tubes while seawater remains outside the heat transfer surface. This arrangement is suitable for cooling engine jacket water, lube oil and selected hydraulic circuits without introducing seawater directly into the equipment loop.
5. Custom Fit for New Builds and Retrofits
VRCOOLER can develop the cooler around the actual sea chest geometry, mounting arrangement and available clearance. Stepped or combined configurations may be considered for irregular spaces or multiple cooling requirements.
6. Material Selection for Marine Conditions
Tube material can be selected according to seawater quality, vessel service and project requirements. Common options may include aluminum brass and 90/10 copper-nickel, subject to engineering review, galvanic-corrosion control and the complete material specification.

Typical Applications
A custom sea chest cooler can be used in marine cooling circuits such as:
Main propulsion engine freshwater cooling
Auxiliary engine and generator cooling
Engine lube oil cooling
Bow thruster cooling
Hydraulic power-unit cooling
Marine air-conditioning and auxiliary equipment cooling
Workboat and offshore equipment cooling
Typical vessel applications include:
Tugboats
Dredgers
Fishing vessels
Barges
Ferries
General cargo ships
Container vessels
Offshore workboats
Supply and service vessels
Yachts and other specialized vessels
The final application should be confirmed against the required heat load, seawater conditions, flow arrangement and vessel operating profile.

Common Problem
-
What is a sea chest cooler?
A sea chest cooler is a marine heat exchanger installed inside a vessel's sea chest. It transfers heat from an internal freshwater or oil circuit to the surrounding seawater through a tube bundle.
-
The terms are often used for similar marine cooling equipment. A box cooler generally describes the cooler configuration, while sea chest cooler emphasizes its installation inside the vessel's sea chest. The exact design depends on the vessel structure and project requirements.
Is a sea chest cooler the same as a box cooler?
-
What can a sea chest cooler cool?
Depending on the design, it can cool engine jacket water, auxiliary-engine circuits, lube oil, hydraulic oil, bow-thruster systems and other onboard equipment. The application must be checked against the heat load and process-fluid conditions.
-
Which tube material is suitable for seawater?
Material selection depends on seawater quality, vessel service, hull material, corrosion-control measures and project requirements. Aluminum brass and 90/10 copper-nickel are possible options, but the final choice should be confirmed by engineering review.
-
Yes, replacement projects can be reviewed using the existing cooler drawing, nameplate, dimensions, connection details, sea chest measurements and equipment data. A complete replacement or a modified configuration may be proposed after technical evaluation.
Can VRCOOLER make a replacement for an existing sea chest cooler?
-
