The reason why seawater cooling is widely used in marine engines is because seawater, as a natural resource, is in abundant supply and has an efficient cooling capacity. The following are the main reasons why seawater cooling is widely used in marine engines:

Availability of cooling medium: Ships usually operate at sea, and seawater as a cooling medium is readily available without the need for additional storage facilities or cooling resource management. This facilitates ships on ocean voyages, as seawater resources are nearly unlimited and free of charge wherever the ship sails.

 

Efficient heat exchange: seawater has a large heat capacity and is able to carry away heat efficiently, so in high-power marine engines, seawater can quickly dissipate the heat from the engine. Especially in ocean-going cargo ships or warships that require efficient cooling, seawater cooling systems are able to meet the demand for large-scale heat transfer.

 

Simple system design: the design of seawater cooling system is relatively simple, usually using pumps to pump seawater directly into the cooler for heat exchange, seawater to take away the heat directly discharged back to the sea. Compared to air cooling or complex closed-loop cooling systems, seawater cooling systems are simpler to install and operate.
