Why Generators Use Hydrogen as a Cooling Medium?

 

The main reasons for using hydrogen as a cooling medium in generators are its high thermal conductivity, low density and low viscosity. Hydrogen has a higher thermal conductivity than air, about seven times that of air, which allows it to absorb heat quickly and efficiently from generator coils and other heat sources.


In addition, hydrogen's low density allows it to provide less drag for the same volume, which reduces wind resistance losses and improves generator efficiency. The low viscosity properties of hydrogen further reduce mechanical friction, allowing the rotor to operate at lower resistance. By using hydrogen, generators can operate at high power densities while reducing heat dissipation problems, thereby increasing power generation efficiency.


In addition, hydrogen is a non-flammable gas and is less likely to explode under the right pressure and concentration conditions, making it a safe cooling medium.
