What is an air compressor intercooler?
The main function of an air compressor intercooler is to cool the air before it enters the next stage of compression. Cold air has a higher density and is therefore easier to compress than hot air. Ideally, the air temperature should be as close to the ambient air temperature as possible. Typically, intercoolers are able to cool compressed air to within 20-30 degrees of the ambient air temperature.
The cooling process starts by feeding cold water into the intercooler and manifold via pipes. The fins attached to the tubes add stability and help to increase the cooling surface area. Using 3/8" tubes instead of 5/8" tubes allows more tubes to be included in the bundle, which is another way to increase the surface area.
As the air passes through the intercooler, moisture from the low velocity air condenses and separates from the air. The moisture is removed from the compressor through a valve located at the bottom of the intercooler housing. This removal method prevents the loss of valuable compressed air and eliminates the need for the entrained water removed during the intercooling process of the compressor, thus increasing the overall efficiency of the compressor. This water particle removal process also reduces impeller corrosion, thereby maintaining long-term compressor performance. The water-reduced cooling air then passes through to the next compression stage, repeating the intercooling process.
