Large Air-Cooled Turbine Generators with Water-Air Coolers

Large air-cooled turbine generators are typically equipped with a water-to-air cooler, a combined cooling system that combines water and air cooling. This cooling system is designed to cope with the high heat generated by powerful turbine generators and to ensure that the generator operates reliably at high temperatures.

The working principle of the water-air cooler is as follows:

Water-cooled section: Some key components inside the generator, such as the stator coil and rotor, are temperature controlled by cooling water. The cooling water circulates within the cooling system and absorbs the heat generated inside the generator. The temperature of these components is controlled to prevent damage caused by overheating.

Air-cooled section: After the water-cooled section, the cooling water exchanges heat with the surrounding air through a radiator or cooler. Typically, this cooler is an air cooler, similar in design to a generator air cooler. The air passes through the cooling surfaces of the cooler and transfers the heat carried by the cooling water to the surrounding ambient air.

Cooling Cycle: The cooling water undergoes a heat exchange to lower its temperature and returns to the inside of the generator, creating a cycle. This cyclic process continuously removes heat from inside the generator, ensuring that the generator remains within the appropriate temperature range.

The advantage of using a water-to-air cooler is that it allows for effective temperature control in large, high-power generators. The water-cooled section cools some of the internal components more effectively, while the air-cooled section transfers the heat removed by the water to the surrounding air, which further reduces the temperature. This design combines the advantages of both cooling methods to provide an efficient and reliable generator cooling solution.
