Box coolers are used to cool diesel engines ranging in power from 3kW to 10,000kW and have various advantages over traditional cooling systems, including compactness, cost-effectiveness, decreased maintenance, and excellent dependability.
Natural convection is used by the boxcooler. The cooling water from the heat source circulates through the tube bundle hung in the sea chest. Heat is delivered from the box cooler tubes to the seawater, which causes it to rise due to its reduced density, resulting in a natural upward circulation. Natural convection flow of saltwater through the sea chest and across the boxcooler tubes is directed and focused by openings in the bottom and upper side of the sea chest.

The Box cooler is a small, closed-circuit cooling system housed in a sea chest beneath the vessel's hull, providing excellent protection from submerged impediments and avoiding the need for raw water pumps, strainers, and filters.
Each boxcooler is individually designed to fit the specific needs of the engine, vessel, and operating circumstances.
Boxcoolers can be configured to fit into narrow places by stepping the unit, and for cases with limited sea chests, by using a combined cooler with separate cooling circuits.
