Why do generators have to be kept cool?

 

Generators need to be cooled so they don't get too hot and stay in a safe range when they're running. When a generator is running, the electrical resistance in its parts and the friction between its moving parts cause it to heat up. If this heat isn't taken away, the generator could boil, which could damage its parts and shorten its life.


A generator's cooling system takes away heat from the generator and keeps its working temperature within a safe range. Most of the time, the cooling system is made up of a coolant, like water or a mixture of water and antifreeze, that flows through the generator's parts and takes heat away from them. The coolant is then cooled by a heat exchanger, which moves heat from the coolant to another cooling medium, like air or ocean.

 

Depending on the size and power of the generator, it may have an air-cooled or liquid-cooled cooling system. To get rid of heat, air-cooled generators move air over the generator's parts, while liquid-cooled generators use a liquid cooler.

 

For a generator to work safely and reliably, it needs to be cooled the right way. If the generator gets too hot, it can damage its parts and stop working for no reason. By keeping the generator cooler, the cooling system can lower the chance that the generator will boil and make the generator more reliable.
