What Is A Generator Cooling Skid?
A generator cooling skid is a fully‑integrated, skid‑mounted closed cooling system built to remove waste heat from diesel or gas generator engines. All key components are pre‑assembled on a single steel base frame, pre‑piped and pre‑wired at factory, for fast on‑site installation instead of piece‑by‑site field assembly.
It handles two main heat sources of a genset:
1. Jacket water (HT high‑temperature loop) – cools engine block, cylinder head
2. Charge air intercooler (LT low‑temperature loop) – cools compressed intake air before combustion
Core typical components
- Circulation pumps (often dual pumps with auto fail‑over for redundancy)
- Heat exchanger: dry cooler / plate heat exchanger / shell & tube heat exchanger
- Motorized 3‑way valve for temperature mixing control
- Diaphragm expansion tank, filters, pressure & temperature sensors
- PLC control panel: monitoring, alarm, interlock & automatic regulation
- Heavy‑duty skid base with vibration dampers
Working principle
Hot coolant from the generator engine flows into the skid. Heat is transferred to secondary cooling medium (air / water / ethylene‑glycol mixture) inside heat exchanger. Cooled fluid flows back to the engine in closed circulation. Dual‑circuit skids separate HT jacket water and LT intercooler loops for independent temperature control.

Key benefits
1. Engine protection: closed‑loop design isolates engine circuit, prevents scaling, corrosion and media cross‑contamination.
2. High reliability: standby pump auto switch avoids genset shutdown upon single pump failure.
3. Plug‑and‑play delivery: factory pre‑assembly & testing; only pipe and power connection required on site.
4. Precise thermal management: stable HT / LT temperature improves genset efficiency and reduces engine wear.
5. Space‑saving: compact skid layout, ideal for containerized gensets, data‑center backup power, oilfield, mining and CHP projects.
Difference vs original genset radiator
Original engine radiators attach directly to the engine. A cooling skid works as remote cooling solution. It can be placed away from the generator unit, flexible for layout constraints of large‑power projects (500 kW‑5000 kW).
