In a shell - tube heat exchanger, one fluid (usually the hot fluid, like the compressed air from the compressor) flows through the tubes, and the other fluid (the cooling medium, often water) flows in the shell that surrounds the tubes. Heat is transferred from the hot fluid in the tubes to the cooler fluid in the shell through the tube walls.

For an air compressor cooler, the hot compressed air gives up its heat to the cooling water, which then takes the heat away and keeps the air temperature at an acceptable level. This cooled air is either further processed in the air system (such as for storage in air tanks) or used directly in applications where a cooler air supply is required.
