Learn How Bearing Oil Coolers Work

A bearing oil cooler is a device used to cool bearings in rotating machinery. It works basically by directing a cooling medium (usually oil) through the bearing to absorb the heat generated by the bearing and carry it away.

The following is how a bearing oil cooler works:

Cooling medium flows through the bearing: In rotating machinery, a special cooler is usually installed, and the oil pump will extract the cooling medium (usually oil) from the oil tank and transport it through the pipeline to the bearing.

Absorption of heat: After entering the bearing, the cooling medium comes into contact with the bearing and absorbs the heat generated due to friction and mechanical loads. Bearings are usually located near the contact surfaces of rotating parts and are therefore subject to higher temperatures.

The cooling medium carries away the heat: After the cooling medium has absorbed the heat from the bearing, it flows through the heat-sinking components (e.g. radiator pads, tubes or radiator chips) in the bearing oil cooler. These heat-sinking components are usually made of metal materials and help to conduct the heat to the surroundings.

Heat dissipation process: In the heat sink components of a bearing oil cooler, the cooling medium comes into contact with the metal surface and releases the heat by conduction and convection. Some bearing oil coolers can also dissipate heat by forced convection with the help of external airflow or fans.

Circulation and recirculation: After the heat dissipation process is completed, the cooling medium is pumped back into the tank again and then re-enters the bearing through the recirculation system to continue the cyclic cooling process.

Through the above working process, the bearing oil cooler can effectively control the working temperature of the bearing and prevent bearing damage caused by overheating. It improves the life and reliability of the bearings and ensures the normal operation of rotating machinery. In some applications, automatic control and regulation of the bearing cooling system can also be achieved by monitoring the temperature and pressure of the cooling medium.
