Heavy Fuel Oil Heater (Shell & Tube Bundle)

A heavy fuel oil heater (shell and tube bundle) is a heat exchanger used to heat heavy fuel oil by transferring heat from a heating medium (usually steam) to the oil, typically to reduce its viscosity for easier pumping or combustion. These heaters utilize a shell and tube design, where the oil flows through tubes while the heating medium flows around the tubes within the shell.

Key Components and Function:
Shell: The outer casing of the heat exchanger, housing the tube bundle.
Tube Bundle: A collection of tubes through which the heavy fuel oil flows.
Heating Medium: Typically steam, but can also be hot oil or other fluids, which flows within the shell, around the tubes.
Heat Transfer: The heating medium transfers heat through the tube walls to the heavy fuel oil, raising its temperature.

How it Works:
1. Oil Flow:
Heavy fuel oil enters the heat exchanger and is directed through the tubes.
2. Heating Medium Flow:
The heating medium, often steam, enters the shell and surrounds the tubes.
3. Heat Transfer:
Heat from the heating medium is transferred through the tube walls to the oil, increasing its temperature.
4. Temperature Control:
The flow rate and/or pressure of the heating medium are adjusted to maintain the desired oil temperature.
5. Output:
The heated oil, now with reduced viscosity, exits the heat exchanger and is ready for further processing or use.

Applications:
Marine Industry: Preheating heavy fuel oil for marine engines to ensure proper combustion.
Power Generation: Heating fuel oil for boilers and turbines.
Industrial Processes: Maintaining the required temperature of heavy fuel oil for various industrial applications.

Advantages:
High Heat Transfer Efficiency: The large surface area of the tubes facilitates efficient heat transfer.
Versatility: Can be used with different heating mediums and for various applications.
Scalability: Tube bundles can be designed to meet specific heating requirements.
