Closed-Loop Generator Cooling With Finned Tube Heat Exchangers
In generator units, large volumes of hot air circulate through the generator stator and rotor. This hot air must be continuously cooled to maintain safe operating temperatures. The finned-tube heat exchanger is a compact, high-efficiency cooler designed to handle this duty.
Each generator set contains multiple coolers (8 units per machine set), connected to a closed-loop cooling water system. The coolers operate in parallel to ensure stable heat removal and equalized water distribution.

Design Parameters
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Cooling capacity per cooler | Q = 178 kW |
| Hot air inlet temperature | tkv = 60°C |
| Hot air outlet temperature | tkr = 40°C |
| Cooling water inlet temperature | tnv = 31°C |
Finned Tube Heat Exchanger Construction
According to the design notes, each cooler is made from:
- Copper–nickel (CuNi) tubes
- Finned aluminium or copper fins mechanically bonded to tubes
- Heat exchanger framework using carbon steel or stainless steel as required
- Tube sheets and headers
This material selection provides excellent corrosion resistance for generator cooling water environments and long operational life.
Advantages of the Finned-Tube Cooler System
-
High Heat Transfer Efficiency
Fins significantly boost the air-side surface area, improving thermal performance with compact dimensions.
-
Low Pressure Loss
The design allows high air volume (5.4 m³/s per cooler) while maintaining acceptable pressure drop.
-
Modular Redundant Arrangement
The 8-cooler configuration ensures that the generator remains operational even if one cooler requires shutdown.
-
Reliable Closed-Loop Cooling
Unlike open cooling towers, this system avoids fouling, scaling, and contamination.
-
Ease of Maintenance
Isolating valves allow individual cooler replacement or inspection without stopping the generator.
