Intercooler and aftercooler terminology Since they both function to cool engine air before it reaches an engine's induction system, the terms aftercooler and intercooler are sometimes used interchangeably. Both titles apply to the charge air cooler when utilized in autos. It serves as the aftercooler and intercooler's most general nomenclature. It alludes to a mechanical component that is positioned between the engine and the turbocharger or supercharger. Because to its placement behind the supercharger or turbocharger, intercoolers are frequently referred to as aftercoolers today.

Aftercooler vs. Intercooler Operation

After the compressor, a heat exchanger known as an aftercooler is utilized in turbocharged engines to quickly return the compressed air to temperatures close to ambient. It condenses moisture from compressed air using ambient air. The air is cooled by the condensation process as well. Uses 

Because they only need to operate for brief periods of time, aftercoolers perform incredibly well in drag racing applications. The popular air-to-water aftercooler known as a Vortech is used primarily in cars and trucks to cool the water by forcing air through the front grill. On the other hand, because they never lose their ability to cool entering air over time, air-to-air intercoolers are far more useful for milder racing and street applications. Both types of intercoolers only function with forced induction engines when the air entering the engine and the cooling medium have a significant temperature differential.
